Kenner R2-D2 (Artoo Deetoo) 1978 Action Figure: Overview

It's hard to believe forty years on that this very basic solid dome Kenner R2-D2 action figure was so treasured when it first came out. These days we are spoilt with a figure of R2-D2 for almost every occasion and with more gadgets and gimmicks than you could swing a Womp Rat at. In many ways, that's part of the original Kenner solid domed R2-D2's charm. He's just plain and simple R2-D2 with nothing added.

There was also something rather charming about the innovation of having R2-D2's (Artoo Deetoo's) name spelt both with initials and numbers, and also spelt phonetically on the card back. It's almost like a mini speak-and-spell lesson for kids which I think was a very thoughtful touch on behalf of Kenner.

I have to confess to having used repro stickers for the solid-headed R2-D2 figure on the left, but aside from that he's in great condition. He's stiff limbed with very little paint loss and the dome still clicks. The Kenner R2-D2 figure on the right has it's original stickers but his head doesn't click and there's a bit more noticeable paint loss (plus I haven't yet cleaned the ingrained dirt off his legs).

When I was a kid I had a couple of spare R2-D2 figure's so I chopped a leg off one and glued it inside another R2-D2 to give him a tripod leg. I wish I still had this Artoo because I'm quite proud of the little bit of customisation even today.

All Star Wars action figures, vehicles, collectibles and Star Wars toys shown on this website are the 3.75 inch scale and from my own private Star Wars collection unless otherwise stated. Where possible original vintage accessories have been used but in some instances I have placed Kenner Star Wars figures with either reproduction weapons and accessories or for Hasbro figures close approximations have been used. This is mostly the case for modern Star Wars lightsabers where the correct item can be very difficult to identify on some ocassions. Vintage Star Wars action figures are shown with their original weapon or accessory when I have them. When a vintage Kenner action figure is shown with an accessory which is not original I have tried to point this out where possible.

All of the Star Wars action figures shown were purchased second hand, usually incomplete, and in bulk. They have been reunited with their original weapons and accessories where we could get hold of them.
