Saga Collection Action Figures Action Figure: Overview

One of the traits of the Saga Collection of 2006 (not to be confused with the Saga Series or Saga Legends Collection etc.) is that the action figures are very often ready and equipped for action and to replay classic movie moments. In fact, more precisely they are designed with particular iconic moments in mind, rather than generic figures meant to stand in for whole scenes. Broadly speaking, many of these Saga Collection action figures represent characters fixed in a split second of movie action.

The Boba Fett figure stand fixes on to his rocket launcher so he can be displayed mid-flight. Although other iterations of Boba Fett have this feature too, the Saga Collection as a whole really stands out as situating its figures in a specific moment of action from the films. The misnamed Hoth R2-D2 has all the kit needed for Yoda to pull out of the back of Luke's X-Wing and throw it all over the floor. The carbonite block for Han Solo is in the process of defrosting. The Saga Collection Darth Vader has force lightening which sits over his head, as he is in the midst of the Emperor's attack whilst he tries to save Luke. Likewise, the The Revenge of the Sith Yoda figure comes with the force lightening that Palpatine uses to launch him across the room. Even the General Grievous (Demise of Grievous) figure has accessories to use to represent his heart and brain in mid-explosion. The Endor C-3PO with the wooden throne chair also fits into this category with its struts for the Ewoks to carry it across the forest and back to the village. Gragra is poised to have Jar Jar Binks take the green amphibian-like carcasses straight out of his hand with lightning speed. Bib Fortuna has his mouth open, mid-speech and is perhaps explaining about the visit of Luke Skywalker to Jabba and about to be knocked out of the way. And in the Saga Collection we get an Hem Dazon figure, to represent the split second in which his head pops up in A New Hope just as the Cantina Band start playing. Even Djas Puhr has his blaster fire effects to attach to the barrel of is guns, albeit this is not a film moment it still fits with the trend.

Then we have The Saga Collection Death Star Briefing set which as a whole represents more of a complete scene than a movie moment, but within this is Admiral Motti who has just the one ball-jointed arm to clutch his collar with as Vader chokes him, thus fixing him in a precise and specific movie moment.

Wherever possible the accessories and features of the Saga Collection action figures have been designed to suggest kinetic action and to bring the figures to life in the moment. We are situated mid-action and in the process of something happening rather than before or after the event, or within a complete episode or scene. The gun is not just loaded and pointed, it is firing but hasn't yet reached its target, the carbonite block isn't frozen or defrosted but in the process of defrosting. The Saga Collection figure range attempts to situate us in the liminal space between cause and effect; i.e. right in the epicentre of the action, in the moment and thus making the recreation of a film moment feel lived and experienced. The accessories take us right into the moment of a split second of movie time, rather than representing a whole scene.

Saga Collection Accessories

All Star Wars action figures, vehicles, collectibles and Star Wars toys shown on this website are the 3.75 inch scale and from my own private Star Wars collection unless otherwise stated. Where possible original vintage accessories have been used but in some instances I have placed Kenner Star Wars figures with either reproduction weapons and accessories or for Hasbro figures close approximations have been used. This is mostly the case for modern Star Wars lightsabers where the correct item can be very difficult to identify on some ocassions. Vintage Star Wars action figures are shown with their original weapon or accessory when I have them. When a vintage Kenner action figure is shown with an accessory which is not original I have tried to point this out where possible.

All of the Star Wars action figures shown were purchased second hand, usually incomplete, and in bulk. They have been reunited with their original weapons and accessories where we could get hold of them.
