Luke Skywalker, The Empire Strikes Back and the World Turned Upside Down...

It is of note that Luke Skywalker spends a considerable amount of his time upside down in The Empire Strikes Back. Firstly, at the Wampa's cave on Hoth were he wakes up with his feet frozen into the roof of the cave as the Wampa's frozen dinner saved for later. Secondly, on Dagobah during his Jedi training when he's doing handstands for Yoda and trying to move rocks with his mind. Thirdly, on Bespin when Luke confronts Darth Vader, finds himself losing a hand and then hanging upside down from the weather vane. I can't think of another film or character within the Star Wars canon where so much time is spent the wrong way up. In fact, Luke finds himself upside down on every single planet in The Empire Strikes Back.

Luke Skywalker Hoth Attack Saga Series

With The Empire Strikes Back being the movie in which everything goes wrong for the Rebel Alliance and the main heroes (from the discovery of the Rebel Base on Hoth, to Luke's discovery of his father's identity, to Han being subjected to torture and carbon freeze on Bespin), perhaps Lucas is giving us a visual represenation of a world turned upside down. It is in this episode that the Rebel Alliance is most on the back foot and the episode in which it most looks like evil is winning out over good, so the visual representation of Luke upside down is very apt.

Luke Skywalker Dagobah Original Trilogy Collection

It is also perhaps worth noting that every time that Luke Skywalker is upside down in The Empire Strikes Back he is surrounded by water in one of it's different states from being embedded by the Wampa monster in the frozen ice of Hoth, to the murky swamps of Dagobah, to being amongst the clouds of Bespin Cloud City. In each of these locations Luke also converses with someone not immediately present through the Force (Obi-Wan on Hoth and Dagobah and Leia on Bespin). Initially there seems to be nothing particularly remarkable about this, until we recognise that in the Prequel Trilogy Obi-Wan Kenobi is unmistakably associated with water and a water sign as a Force wielder. The inference may well be that Luke too is a water sign in his relationship with the Force. See my article Star Wars Trilogy Framing Devices – Fire, Water and Funerals.

All Star Wars action figures, vehicles, collectibles and Star Wars toys shown on this website are the 3.75 inch scale and from my own private Star Wars collection unless otherwise stated. Where possible original vintage accessories have been used but in some instances I have placed Kenner Star Wars figures with either reproduction weapons and accessories or for Hasbro figures close approximations have been used. This is mostly the case for modern Star Wars lightsabers where the correct item can be very difficult to identify on some ocassions. Vintage Star Wars action figures are shown with their original weapon or accessory when I have them. When a vintage Kenner action figure is shown with an accessory which is not original I have tried to point this out where possible.

All of the Star Wars action figures shown were purchased second hand, usually incomplete, and in bulk. They have been reunited with their original weapons and accessories where we could get hold of them.
