Star Wars Action Figures and Small Household Gods...

It's fair to say that in the late seventies and early eighties, possessing Kenner actions figures from the Star Wars films helped bring us closer to the movies which we were only able to watch intermittently. Would we, for instance, have ever remembered Hammerhead from the film without the original action figure? For that matter without the action figures perhaps our memories of R5-D4 and Walrus Man would have been much less vivid. Being able to possess the action figures and put a name to them helped the film to solidify and coalesce in our minds.

Vintage Kenner R5-D4

These movie characters seem iconic today, but we should remember that access to the movies wasn't as easy in the late 1970s as it is today. Once you'd seen A New Hope at the cinema you might have to wait a year or more before it was televised and you couldn't just go out and buy a VHS or DVD copy.

The action figures became totems, almost like statues of Roman household gods they fed into a very deep primitive need to make sense of the film and even the larger world using iconography that we could hold in our hands. Just like the Roman gods, the film wasn't physically there with us, but these figures functioned almost as small gods helping us feel closer to it. With this in mind it's hardly surprising that in some parts of the world Jedi has become an accepted, or more or less acceptable, religion in its own right.

All Star Wars action figures, vehicles, collectibles and Star Wars toys shown on this website are the 3.75 inch scale and from my own private Star Wars collection unless otherwise stated. Where possible original vintage accessories have been used but in some instances I have placed Kenner Star Wars figures with either reproduction weapons and accessories or for Hasbro figures close approximations have been used. This is mostly the case for modern Star Wars lightsabers where the correct item can be very difficult to identify on some ocassions. Vintage Star Wars action figures are shown with their original weapon or accessory when I have them. When a vintage Kenner action figure is shown with an accessory which is not original I have tried to point this out where possible.

All of the Star Wars action figures shown were purchased second hand, usually incomplete, and in bulk. They have been reunited with their original weapons and accessories where we could get hold of them.
