The Subservience of Darth Vader / Anakin Skywalker to his Masters...

It is of note that throughout all the first six Star Wars films and throughout Anakin's life he is always answerable to a master; From his Hutt slave owner, to his slave owner Watto through to his master Obi-Wan and then Jedi Masters and then to Emperor Palpatine himself. At no point is Anakin truly free.

Watto

Within this context it is much easier to sympathise with his barely contained rage when Mace Windu tells him, 'we do not grant you the rank of master' in ROTS. His fate is to always be in servitude both as Anakin and as Darth Vader and always to have a master rather than to be a master. This theme is especially emphasised in his relationship with Obi-Wan, where his continual exclamations of 'yes Master', serve to illustrate the context of the relationship. Because this is a more positive species of master-disciple relationship we need to be reminded that Anakin has essentially just swapped one master for another. As Darth Vader he conveniently overlooks the fact that he has placed himself in servitude to the Emperor during the duel scene with Obi-Wan in Episode IV. He is keen to impress upon Obi-Wan that 'Now I am the master'. The great irony is that his deep desire to be in charge has once again placed him in servitude.

As an aside it's worth noting here the changes in diction between Anakin and Darth in the choice of personal pronouns. Anakin would never use an antiquated 'thy', but a more informal 'your'. Only as Vader does such diction slide off his tongue, 'What is thy bidding my master?'. I doubt Anakin would ever use the word 'bidding' either. He seems to have undergone some sort of linguistic transplant in his transition from Anakin to Darth.

All Star Wars action figures, vehicles, collectibles and Star Wars toys shown on this website are the 3.75 inch scale and from my own private Star Wars collection unless otherwise stated. Where possible original vintage accessories have been used but in some instances I have placed Kenner Star Wars figures with either reproduction weapons and accessories or for Hasbro figures close approximations have been used. This is mostly the case for modern Star Wars lightsabers where the correct item can be very difficult to identify on some ocassions. Vintage Star Wars action figures are shown with their original weapon or accessory when I have them. When a vintage Kenner action figure is shown with an accessory which is not original I have tried to point this out where possible.

All of the Star Wars action figures shown were purchased second hand, usually incomplete, and in bulk. They have been reunited with their original weapons and accessories where we could get hold of them.
