Battle Damaged X-Wing Fighter Kenner: Overview

Battle Damaged X-Wing Fighter side view

I cobbled together my vintage Kenner Luke Skywalker's Battle Damaged X-Wing Fighter vehicle out of spares. The X-Wing carcass had a lot of yellowing much of which I managed to get off but it still has a tinge to it. To get hold of the four wing guns was fairly easy as they kept turning up in job lots and now I have about ten of them which is much more than I need. The trickiest part to get hold of for the Kenner X-Wing Fighter is without doubt the cockpit lid as these are quite expensive when sold retail on eBay so I had to wait for one to turn up cheap in a job lot.

In many ways the X-Wing Fighter vehicle bucked the trend of many of the Kenner ships and vehicles in that having the R2-D2 dome fixed on meant that you didn't have to buy an extra action figure to complete the scene. This was quickly corrected with the release of the Kenner Y-Wing Fighter which instead had a space for you to insert an astromech droid figure behind the cockpit.

The battle damage transfers were quite an innovative feature for their time and still left the X-Wing fairly versatile in that it could represent Luke's Red Five X-Wing Fighter both during and after the Battle over Yavin in A New Hope and following his crash landing on Dagobah in The Empire Strikes Back. There are, however, very few clean Kenner X-Wing Fighters out there these days which can be really limiting in terms of play and display possibilities and you really have to resort to later X-Wing Fighters such as the Power of the Force one if you want to build up a squadron of clean X-Wing Fighters.

Whilst writing this I've had a look at the box art for the Battle Damaged X-Wing and the X-Wing Fighter displayed on the box for this Empire Strikes back release looks quite different from what I have. For one thing the cockpit lid looks much darker than the clear one which came with the vehicle and for another the engines look quite blackened rather than being white and even the battle damaged transfers look much darker. This variant appeared on the Kenner box and most variants with this darker detailing look to come from the States. As such it seems that what I have is a Palitoy X-Wing Fighter which has skimped on the better detailing of its US counterpart. This would be in keeping with the Palitoy Landspeeder which came with a closed bonnet thus making it easier to manufacture than its Kenner equivalent with the opening bonnet. Now I'm going to have to go out and find myself a Kenner X-Wing.

All Star Wars action figures, vehicles, collectibles and Star Wars toys shown on this website are the 3.75 inch scale and from my own private Star Wars collection unless otherwise stated. Where possible original vintage accessories have been used but in some instances I have placed Kenner Star Wars figures with either reproduction weapons and accessories or for Hasbro figures close approximations have been used. This is mostly the case for modern Star Wars lightsabers where the correct item can be very difficult to identify on some ocassions. Vintage Star Wars action figures are shown with their original weapon or accessory when I have them. When a vintage Kenner action figure is shown with an accessory which is not original I have tried to point this out where possible.

All of the Star Wars action figures shown were purchased second hand, usually incomplete, and in bulk. They have been reunited with their original weapons and accessories where we could get hold of them.
