AST-5 (Armored Sentinel Transport Vehicle) The Return of the Jedi Overview

Kenner AST-5 side view

The clue to the versatility of the AST-5 mini-rig is in the name: Armored Sentinel Transport. It wasn't only meant as a one-man ship for Jabba's palace, but as a 'sentinel' it was also a standing gun turret which you could use to defend a position. Although it didn't appear in the film, the only other ship we originally had to whizz around the Pit of Carkoon was the One-Man Sail Skiff, so the AST-5 added some much needed variety to what was available. The rusty colour of the AST-5 vehicle left little room for doubt that it belonged among Jabba's fleet of ships, and just to emphasise the point on the box cover it was shown being piloted by Klaatu, although oddly enough not the skiff guard outfit version of the figure.

There are a few things about the AST-5 which didn't work. Firstly, only one of Jabba's skiff guards fits in the cockpit. Weequay doesn't fit and neither does Klaatu in Skiff Guard Outfit as his shoulders are too wide. Nikto will fit in but it's still tight. The cockpit also looks a little bit too much like a coffin. Once you put a figure inside there and close the cockpit lid, he looks uncannily like he's been cryogenically frozen.

All Star Wars action figures, vehicles, collectibles and Star Wars toys shown on this website are the 3.75 inch scale and from my own private Star Wars collection unless otherwise stated. Where possible original vintage accessories have been used but in some instances I have placed Kenner Star Wars figures with either reproduction weapons and accessories or for Hasbro figures close approximations have been used. This is mostly the case for modern Star Wars lightsabers where the correct item can be very difficult to identify on some ocassions. Vintage Star Wars action figures are shown with their original weapon or accessory when I have them. When a vintage Kenner action figure is shown with an accessory which is not original I have tried to point this out where possible.

All of the Star Wars action figures shown were purchased second hand, usually incomplete, and in bulk. They have been reunited with their original weapons and accessories where we could get hold of them.
