Luke Skywalker's Lightsaber Storage...

When Luke Skywalker is about to take off from Hoth in his X-Wing Fighter in The Empire Strikes Back there is a nice little touch if you look closely into the cockpit. He's built a little stand for his lightsaber up front on top of the controls of his cockpit. Hopefully it's got a locking mechanism so that he doesn't accidentally cut a hole in the cockpit mid-flight.

Luke also appears to have a similar holder for his lightsaber in his Hoth Snow Speeder. When his ship is about to be crushed under the AT-AT's foot we see him quickly reach in to grab it so we know it isn't attached to his flight suit.

Compared to previous Jedi who seem to have had a strong tendancy of losing their weapons, Luke is rather anal about knowing where his is, including the lightsaber compartment that he builds into R2-D2 in The Return of the Jedi. By contrast Anakin is always losing his lightsaber and in The Revenge of the Sith Obi-Wan has to have his returned to him shortly before order 66 is executed. For that matter Obi-Wan also loses his lightsaber in the duel with Darth Maul and has to Force grab Qui-Gon's lightsaber in order to finish off the Sith Lord.

By contrast, the young Skywalker could teach the Jedi of the Old Republic a few things about taking good care of their lightsabers. In fact, in the Empire Strikes Back, Vader has to chop off Luke's hand to separate him from his weapon, and he never accidentally drops or loses it in combat. He even has it to hand when he wakes up upside down in the Wampa's cave.

Note 1: Luke only ever deliberately tosses lightsabers away, as he did in the Return of the Jedi when he tells the Emperor that he has failed and as he did in The Last Jedi when Rey ceremoniously presents him with his old laser sword and he unceremoniously throws it over his shoulder. This is actually a very cleverly executed cinematic moment, and by so deftly taking us from the sublime to the ridiculous we quickly dispense with the sort of dogged reverence for the rugged old Jedi which might otherwise have got in the way of the story telling. It doesn't only subvert our expectations of Luke, it takes us back to Yoda's comic buffoonry on Dagobah in The Empire Strikes Back. The introduction to neither of the reclusive Jedi is what we expect and both are 'humanised' in the process. In A New Hope Ben Kenobi might have harped on about the lightsaber being 'an elegant weapon for a more civilised age', but by now both we and Luke know different and the lightsaber which Luke once cherished and venerated as a Jedi relic and trusted weapon has now become a worthless symbol of the failure of the Jedi.

Note 2: In the top banner photo Luke carries a Ben Kenobi lightsaber, but this is the correct lightsaber in the sense that it is the one that this 30th Anniversary Hoth Snow Speeder pilot figure was packaged with.

Luke Skywalker Wampa Cave Saga Series

All Star Wars action figures, vehicles, collectibles and Star Wars toys shown on this website are the 3.75 inch scale and from my own private Star Wars collection unless otherwise stated. Where possible original vintage accessories have been used but in some instances I have placed Kenner Star Wars figures with either reproduction weapons and accessories or for Hasbro figures close approximations have been used. This is mostly the case for modern Star Wars lightsabers where the correct item can be very difficult to identify on some ocassions. Vintage Star Wars action figures are shown with their original weapon or accessory when I have them. When a vintage Kenner action figure is shown with an accessory which is not original I have tried to point this out where possible.

All of the Star Wars action figures shown were purchased second hand, usually incomplete, and in bulk. They have been reunited with their original weapons and accessories where we could get hold of them.
