The Absence of an Information Age and News in the Star Wars Galaxy...

Dexter Jettster with Kamino dart

There is one element of sparseness which runs through all the Star Wars films. This is to be found in the complete absence of journalism, news and media. For such a technological world with space ships, blasters, Death Stars etc. this has to be of particular note. The Star Wars Universe so it seems has never had an information age. This is reflected very well in Episode II Attack of the Clones, when in order to discover the whereabouts of a planet Obi-Wan first has to seek the information he needs from the private Jedi Archives and then from Dexter Jettster (the unhygienic diner owner and ex prospector). Information is not public on Coruscant for all its show of democracy. The Jedi it seems are not only custodians of information, but also its guardians. The Jedi Archives are not networked to anything and nor is the information they hold freely available. Information is partitioned out across the Galaxy in the form of legend, rumour and incomplete digital documents.

The war between Jedi and Sith isn't just a fight between good and evil then, it is also a fight for the control of information and knowledge which is kept equally out of the public domain by both sides. The Original Trilogy of course pre-dates our own Digital Information Age, but it is nonetheless striking that in the Star Wars world there is no news. Whilst we are in a technological world, we are firmly planted in a universe of myth and legend, and of stories passed down through oral traditions.

It is quite ironic as such that in the opening credits to The Revenge of the Sith we read the words '20th Century Fox: A News Corporation Company'. The only news is that there is no news although if we look at episodes I and II there do appear to be plenty of sports channels available on both Tatooine and Coruscant.

All Star Wars action figures, vehicles, collectibles and Star Wars toys shown on this website are the 3.75 inch scale and from my own private Star Wars collection unless otherwise stated. Where possible original vintage accessories have been used but in some instances I have placed Kenner Star Wars figures with either reproduction weapons and accessories or for Hasbro figures close approximations have been used. This is mostly the case for modern Star Wars lightsabers where the correct item can be very difficult to identify on some ocassions. Vintage Star Wars action figures are shown with their original weapon or accessory when I have them. When a vintage Kenner action figure is shown with an accessory which is not original I have tried to point this out where possible.

All of the Star Wars action figures shown were purchased second hand, usually incomplete, and in bulk. They have been reunited with their original weapons and accessories where we could get hold of them.
