C-3PO (McQuarrie Concept) Action Figure: Overview

C-3PO Figure McQuarrie Concept front 30th Anniversary

The 30th Anniversary McQuarrie Concept C-3PO action figure looks more finished than his counterpart from the movies. He also looks very sporty, almost like he's wearing a droid tracksuit. The hands look very human. Unfortunately, the McQuarrie Concept C-3PO is one of the few 30th Anniversary Collection action figures which doesn't have any knee articulation.

The Ralph McQuarrie Concept C-3PO came packed with a concept R2-D2 figure which I don't have as yet.

This 30th Anniversary Collection C-3PO action figure provides a good bridge between the android that we first meet in A New Hope and it's design influences such as the False Maria robot from the 1927 silent film Metropolis. The cybernetic headphones/ halo have been carried directly over to the concept C-3PO figure. The Art Deco influence is also particularly evident.

In Metropolis Maria and the Maria robot she becomes form some sort of bridge between the underclass of workers and their overlord masters. Similarly, C-3PO seems to have been conceived of also as a type of bridge between different classes living in the Star Wars world. He first tells us that he is 'human-cyborg' relations, presumably forming a bridge of communication between the underclass of droids and their human masters. However, in some very subtle ways C-3PO's role within the Star Wars films is actually much more significant than this.

In Metropolis the role of the Maria is in part that of a Madonna figure and this too is carried over to the Star Wars movies in the form of virgin births, including Anakin's immaculation conception, Boba Fett's having only a father and, just as importantly, C-3PO having had life breathed in to him by one sole Maker (rather than having been manufactured in a droid factory). Whilst there is something of the Frankenstein's monster about this, the representation of C-3PO often errs more towards more of a son of God role which ironically goes unnoticed by any of the other characters. See, for instance my article on The Significance of C-3PO in the Star Wars Movies.

Other 30th Anniversary Collection Action Figures

All Star Wars action figures, vehicles, collectibles and Star Wars toys shown on this website are the 3.75 inch scale and from my own private Star Wars collection unless otherwise stated. Where possible original vintage accessories have been used but in some instances I have placed Kenner Star Wars figures with either reproduction weapons and accessories or for Hasbro figures close approximations have been used. This is mostly the case for modern Star Wars lightsabers where the correct item can be very difficult to identify on some ocassions. Vintage Star Wars action figures are shown with their original weapon or accessory when I have them. When a vintage Kenner action figure is shown with an accessory which is not original I have tried to point this out where possible.

All of the Star Wars action figures shown were purchased second hand, usually incomplete, and in bulk. They have been reunited with their original weapons and accessories where we could get hold of them.
